In a rapid and highly coordinated move, Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the endorsements of a majority of pledged Democratic convention delegates, less than a day after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection. This swift consolidation of support, occurring without a primary vote by the people, raises significant concerns about the transparency and democratic nature of the process.
Harris, speaking from her campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, addressed her supporters with a promise to take on Republican Donald Trump. Drawing on her background as a prosecutor, she declared, “I took on perpetrators of all kinds,” and emphasized her readiness to face Trump, whom she described as a cheater and fraudster.
Despite her rapid ascent, the absence of any significant challengers stepping forward to contest Harris’s nomination has left many questioning the legitimacy of this process. Democratic convention delegations from numerous states quickly endorsed her, reflecting a broader, almost pre-ordained coalescing of support within the party. This move suggests a lack of genuine democratic engagement, as the delegates, now uncommitted following Biden’s withdrawal, are seemingly being directed to support Harris.
The Democratic National Committee has yet to finalize its rules for the nominating vote in August, but the swift flocking of delegates to Harris indicates a predetermined outcome. With over 3,930 pledged delegates at the Democratic convention, the majority backing Harris appears to foreclose any opportunity for a competitive primary process.
In her remarks, Harris thanked her campaign staff and confirmed that Biden campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon would run her presidential bid. Biden’s former campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, will also remain on Harris’s team. Harris praised Biden’s presidency, claiming he surpassed the legacy of most two-term presidents.
President Biden, speaking from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where he is recovering from Covid, expressed his support for Harris and his belief that stepping aside was the right decision. This endorsement, however, has done little to allay concerns about the lack of a democratic process in selecting the new nominee.
Notable Democratic figures such as Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi quickly endorsed Harris. Even moderate Sen. Joe Manchin, who had been considering a presidential bid, announced he would not seek the nomination.
All 50 state Democratic Party chairs and a multitude of state delegations to the Democratic National Convention have endorsed Harris, further cementing her position. This overwhelming and rapid support, however, has sparked criticism and suspicion about the orchestrated nature of these endorsements and the bypassing of a true primary process.
Despite her rapid consolidation of support, Harris faces the challenge of reintroducing herself to the American public and overcoming the baggage of being in President Biden’s shadow for the past four years. Her rocky 2020 presidential campaign, which collapsed due to a lack of funds before any votes were cast, looms over her new bid for the presidency.
Harris’s campaign has already raised over $80 million since Biden’s withdrawal, adding to the $100 million reported by ActBlue in contributions to Democratic candidates and groups. The main pro-Biden super PAC, Future Forward, secured $150 million in new commitments from donors previously uncommitted.
Republicans, meanwhile, have quickly adapted to the new dynamic, with Trump’s campaign labeling Harris as “weak on crime” and too far left for the country. They argue that Harris will be an even worse president than Biden.
The Democratic Party now faces a 3½-month sprint to the November election, with Harris needing to unite the party and prepare for a fierce contest against Trump. The rapid and seemingly orchestrated support for her candidacy raises questions about the democratic integrity of the nomination process and the motivations behind such swift endorsements.
